How many miles do we
hike each day?
On our guided hikes, plan on 5 – 9 miles per
day, with altitude changes averaging 1,000 – 3,000 feet. This will
vary on self-guided programs where you can choose from different
routes and difficulty levels.
What about the guides?
Our guides are all Austrian or Swiss
English-speaking certified guides who love the Alps and enjoy
sharing their experiences and their culture with visitors.
Where do we stay?
In Switzerland, we use 3 or 4 star inns and
hotels—upper standard class and first class. In Austria, our
lodging is in 3 star, 4 star and deluxe inns and hotels. All
accommodations have private bath and toilet facilities, direct dial
phones, TV and many other amenities such as sauna, whirlpool and
indoor swimming pool.
What are the meals like?
All of our programs in Austria and Switzerland
include breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is buffet style and the
dinners can range from four to six courses. Every inn and hotel can
accommodate special dietary requests—just let them know when you
check-in.
How do I get to the villages?
Wanderweg Holidays provides you with directions
from the main airports to your Austrian or Swiss hiking village. In
some programs, travel passes are included in the package, and if
not, they can be purchased from us separately.
How many people are in a
group?
In Switzerland, a group of 10 – 12 people is
the maximum, but we will operate with as few as 2 – 4 people and
never cancel a scheduled hiking week. Often, on our guided hikes in
Austria, people from other countries will join the group, but the
group size rarely exceeds 12 – 14 people.
What about singles?
Our single traveler reservations average nearly
30% for several reasons. One reason is the relative high safety for
traveling alone in Austria and Switzerland – no wild bears, or
poisonous snakes. We also charge the lowest single supplement in
the business, and last but not least, the Austrians and Swiss like
Americans!
What kind of shape must I
be in?
Hiking in the Alps, even at a moderate
difficulty level is not like visiting Disneyland. If you want to
get the most from your vacation, you’ll want to have a dedicated
exercise program several months before you travel. The Alps are up
and down, but not necessarily straight up and down. Also remember
that the Alps are at a high elevation, which can make alpine hiking
a bit harder for someone from Kansas than for someone who lives in
the Colorado Rockies.
What kind of shoes do I need?
Definitely high top hiking boots, for your own
benefit. A low shoe would not give you the guaranteed Achilles and
ankle support you need for uneven surfaces. Hiking boots today are
lighter and less expensive than 10 – 15 years ago. You can buy a
spray to waterproof your boots or spend a little more and get
waterproofed boots.
What do I pack for the hike?
We provide a suggested packing list for your
daily hikes. Some items will change, depending on the time of year
and destination you choose. Just give us a call and we will modify
your packing list accordingly.
What about canceling?
Refer to our cancellation policy. We strongly
recommend trip cancellation insurance and an application is included
in your first documents received immediately following your
reservation deposit.
