village in French-speaking Switzerland, nestled in the world
famous Gstaad valley. This sunny, high alpine valley is
known for farming and cheese-making and many of the original
Swiss chalets are centuries old, yet proudly preserved and
often signed, dated, annotated and beautifully decorated

In March 1999, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones lifted off
from Chateau d’Oex for their world record, non-stop
round-the-world hot air balloon flight in the now famous
Breitling Orbiter 3.

With more than 186 miles of trails and a
long mild season from May through October, this region is a
dream for hikers. Add the peaceful beauty of
colorful hot air balloons floating overhead, above the
peaks, and you have a picture postcard vacation spot. |
Chateau-d’Oex also offers easy access by
train to popular destinations such as Gstaad, renown for
shopping and sophistication; Rougemont, a quaint well-preserved
village dating back to the Middle Ages; Montreux, perched on the
shores of lake Geneva in the midst of acres of family-owned
vineyards; the stunning Diablerets Glacier which offers
year-round skiing; and of course, Geneva.
